Inducted in 2017

sheilanewmanSheila Newman is no stranger to the music scene. At the young age of 13 she was taught to play Hawaiian steel guitar. Following those guitar lessons she started playing at local dances and variety shows. Today, 70 years later, she continues to play her guitar and sing.

In 1968 and 1969, Sheila appeared as a guest on CBC's Countrytime and Twelve for Summer - two National TV productions. She also performed with Vic Mullen and the Boutilier Brothers at the Lobster Trap Caberea in Halifax and over the years appeared as a guest on several radio stations in Halifax, Truro, and Charlottetown, PEI., as well as being a regular guest at many local country shows and dances in Halifax, Dartmouth and the surrounding areas.

Sheila was a Talent Contest winner at Vic Mullen's Countrytime show in Dartmouth in the 1960s.

Sheila is also a music writer, having written the music for the lyrics of two of Herb Brimicombe's songs, entitled Nova Scotia My Paradise and Loneliness and Heartbreak. The music for the song recorded by her son Curtis Newman, entitled Expo 67 was also penned by Sheila Newman.

All these accolades belong to a young woman who grew up in Lantz, Nova Scotia where, along with all her performances and public appearances, she and her husband raised 6 children, three of whom performed regularly on stage with their mother and two of whom are NSCMHF Inductees today, namely, Bonnie Ashley and Jo-Ann Newman.
