A life time resident of Lower Argyle, Nova Scotia, Gary Greene comes from a musical family. He is a self-taught musician and can play piano, bass guitar, mandolin, banjo and fiddle, with the fiddle being his favorite instrument. He has been performing for the past 50 years and has backed-up many artists.In 1994, Gary was a judge at the Grand Masters Canadian Fiddling Contest. He also judged the Maritime Fiddling Contest for six years. He won in the Maritime Fiddling Championship Class in 1994. Gary also won the Johnny Mooring Fiddling Contest in 1981 and placed first in the Down East Old Time Fiddle Contest in 1993. He feels honoured to have had such artists as J.P. Cormier, Calvin Volroth, Robert Joudrey and Robert Mundell write fiddlle tunes for him to record.
His recordings include: Toe Tappin' Fiddlin', Messerin' Around, Traditional Down East and Just One More Tune Honey. Gary has also played on many CDs for various other artists.
In 1995 Gary appeared on l'Acadie, Dartmouth CBC TV, and at Acadie a la Mode in Paris, France in 2002, Southern France in 2003, the French Alps in 2004, Skagen Denmark International Festival in 2004, and St. Pierre and Miquelon in 2005. He was a guest on ATV's Up Home Tonight in the mid 1980 and also on CIFA Radio Live.
Gary continues to be a favourite at the exhibitions and festivals around our province such as the Hank Snow Tributes, Tommy Cash Show at the Yarmouth Exhibition, Lunenburg Folk Festival and Center 200 in Sydney, Nova Scotia.
