Stellarton musician Art Fitt, played his first paying gig at the age of twelve, earning twelve dollars for his performance. He went on to build a lifelong career in country music, traveling and playing throughout Canada and the United States.
His early years in a musical, coal mining family, and performing at house parties provided early skills which he later employed in professional bands across Canada.
Art became a multi-talented musician, playing many instruments, singing and entertaining. As a fourteen year old, he was inspired watching John Allen Cameron, and fifteen years later was fortunate to share the stage with him in Montreal.
In addition to performing both locally and abroad, Art worked as a talent manager and booking agent in Halifax. This presented the opportunity to work with such well-known artists as; Ronnie Prophet, Red Sovine, Mel Tillis, Charlie Pride, Hank Williams’ band; “The Drifting Cowboys” and Elvis Presley’s vocal band; “Memphis”, to name a few.
In or about 1985, Art moved home to Stellarton, where he currently owns and operates his own recording studio; “Grace Studios”. He gives generously of his time, helping fellow musicians. He is recognised for his work as a one-man band, as well as running talent contests for amateur singers. Art’s musical career reflects a deep connection to his local community and his work.
“Music is like my right hand – it’s a part of my body. I was fortunate to work with a lot of great musicians.” Art admits, while other artists considered it a privilege to be able to work with him. “It has been a two-way street, a lot of fun, and good music.” Music is definitely what Art Fitt is and what he portrays.
